Dedicative Social Activist Initiative Saves a Girl from Early Marriage and Continue her Study at Jashore

Pretish Roy is a development worker who lives in Bhangura village of Jamdia Union under Bagherpara Upazila in Jashore district. He is very much dedicated to rendering services to people. He is a president of a CSO named Biborton Jubo Sangha and member of a CBO named MANOBATA. He is also a gender promoter of 5 Kishor-Kishore Club under Department of Women Affairs in Bagherpara Upazila. He is also working as volunteers with NGOs.
After selecting the Youth Representative of Upazila GBV Platform under the project “Combating Gender-Based Violence” he told that-
“Getting informed with the Platform would act as an impetus to multiply my effort in preventing GBV as well as Child Marriage”.
The platform member named Pritish Roy talked with Ritu and learned that her parents are arranging marriage against her will on 02 July 2020. In fact, Rithu Biswas (15) is a resident of Bhangura village of Jamdia union under Jashore district. She also informed to Pritish Roy that she wants to continue her studies to receive higher education and obtain Government service in future. She also provided counseling to the minor girl to encourage them in study. Afterwards, her parents arranged her marriage with a Chandshi doctor due to extreme poverty and getting chance of marrying daughter with a good bridegroom. As, Ritu’s father is Monmoto Biswas is a poor farmer and hardly bear expenses of family.
Pritish Roy discussed with the parents and tried to motivate them that Ritu is meritorious and she has a bright future if they support her. He added that various organizations and platforms are working at Jamdia union to support poor girls to continue their studies. Moreover, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Bagherpara is providing support to poor families in this regard. He tried to make the parents understand that child marriage is a curse in our society, and it defends to make a happy family. He also reminded them regarding child marriage preventing law and its punishment in our country.
Ritu’s father Monmotto Biswas committed that- “I would not take any initiations to arrange Ritu’s marriage before her age at 18. You really open my eyes and I try my best to continue her study. I also want to continue my daughter study but due to financial crisis I made that decision but now understand my mistake.”
Pritish Roy and others member also referred the family to receive food support from Union Parishad. Pritish Roy has also informed UNO of Bagherpara so that Ritu would receive social security as well as financial support to continue her studies.0
